There are many different effects after an eruption that create a health hazard for both human and wildlife alike. When a volcano erupts it is very powerful and the effects of it can be felt on other continents. Volcano eruptions have even destroyed entire cities throughout history most famously Pompeii was buried by volcanic ash in 79 A.D. There are many negative effects of volcanoes erupting. The extreme force of a volcano erupting can sometimes actually cause an earthquake. An earthquake happens because of tectonic plates rubbing against each other on fault lines. Most volcanoes are located on fault lines which is why they can sometimes cause earthquakes. This is also why earthquakes can also cause volcanoes to erupt. The earthquakes caused by volcanoes are usually not felt by people but can register on the Richter scale. The magma of a volcano is what causes the earthquake, when the magma gets into the cracks in the plate and causes pressure to build up. In 1991 the mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines was caused by many small earthquakes from magma in the volcano entering the cracks in the tectonic plates. That caused the pressure to build up until the volcano erupted and thousands of tons of gases were released into the atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions can also have negative effects on the weather and climate of an area and region. When a volcano erupts a lot of gases are released that can go all the way into the atmosphere and can cause a cooling effect to occur. The other effect of eruptions can warm the atmosphere, because of the greenhouse gases they also emit. According to the British geological survey, 100 to 300 million tons of co2 are released each year by both underwater and land volcanoes. Although this is a smaller amount than what humans create, it is still a large amount that is being released every year. Large eruptions such as the Pinatubo eruption can cause temperatures around the world to drop for the following years. Another effect of volcanic eruptions is plants and wildlife dying in the area. The lava that is sent flying for miles of an explosive eruption, can cause wildfires that can devastate a wildlife area. When an explosive eruption occurs it also sends a lot of ash that can wreak havoc on the wildlifes ability to breath and by contaminating water sources. When mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, it is estimated that 24,115 animals died due to the ash. The ash is also hard on insects because ash can damage the wings of insects. Plant life can be damaged for years depending on the amount of rain they receive after an eruption. In Hawaii in only two years some plant life has started growing back from a volcano that had lava flows, because of the heavy rainfall that occurs there. In another part of Hawaii where there is little rainfall, the plant life has still not recovered from the lava flows that occurred two hundred years ago. The last effect of a volcanic eruption is the effect on.

Integrated Design and Construction

Question: Discuss about the Integrated Design and Construction. Answer: Introduction: Also called PS, polystyrene insulation refers to using a synthetic aromatic fiber which is manufactured from a styrene monomer in the insulation of structures. As opposed to the other insulators, polystyrene if found rigid. It can also withstand very high temperatures and as well act as a barrier to noise thereby reducing noise levels(Harley 2002, p. 358). This insulation occurs either as expanded polystyrene or extruded polystyrene. Expanded polystyrenes are found in such substances as packing foam pellets which such times as models of architecture are often made from extruded polystyrene. Foamed polystyrene contains numerous micro air bubbles which are contained within it. Being that air is a poor conductor of heat and with the high thermal mass of polystyrene, polystyrene becomes efficient in insulation preventing the transfer of heat. As the thickness of polystyrene increases, its effective thermal insulation properties also increase with this increase even higher in extruded polystyrene. Extruded polystyrene is a better thermal insulator than expanded polystyrene due to the high density of its structure and its ability to resist moisture(Elpel 2010, p. 139). On the other hand, expanded polystyrene easily get soaked with moisture they deteriorating its R-value. It is for this reason that it is recommended to keep expanded polystyrene free from vapor during usage. Regarding acoustics, polystyrene is quite a poor insulator of sound but the property can be improved by linking it to more rigid materials. An example for this case is linking polystyrene with insulated panels which would improve its acoustic blocking properties. This is an insulation made from thin fibers of glass which are often light-weight as well as cost effective. Fiberglass insulation is often packaged in the form of rock wool which is either 8-foot batts or loose fills. The use of fiberglass for insulation dated back to the 20th century and it became more popular after people lost favor and taste for asbestos due to its risks of causing cancer. Fiberglass is currently used in insulation of modern structures in the construction industry. Unlike polystyrene, fiberglass has excellent acoustic properties. The numerous bound fibers in the insulation are responsible for this property. These bond fibers also trap heat thereby making fiberglass thermally effective as far as regulating heat loss is concerned. Fiberglass neither burns nor absorbs water because it is made of glass(Carey 2012, p. 368). As a result of the increasing environmental concerns in relation to manufacture of insulators, a great percent of newly manufactured fiberglass is made from recycled fiberglass. This improves on the environmental sustainability. Also, observes in fiberglass is the pink color even though fiberglass is not naturally pink. The pink color is an additive by the manufacturer for marketing purposes as a pink and softer fiberglass is preferred by a buyer compared to the light gray or white natural one(Learning 2012, p. 258). Fiberglass is as well used in the creation of products including tent poles, automobile bodies, shower curtains, roofing and boat hulls. By trapping heat between the fiber bonds, fiberglass can keep rooms cool in the summer and warm during winter thus a convenient mechanism for enhancing energy efficiency. Despite the benefits of fiberglass insulator, they also have drawbacks. These include itching, irritation, and rashes that are caused when the particles of fiberglass get into contact with the skin. Still, airborne particles of fiberglass have the ability to be deeply lodged into the lungs and hence believed to causative agents of cancer and other health related complications. It is due to this health hazard that all fiberglass insulators must be labeled with a cancer warning. Fiberglass releases particles into the air upon disturbance(Seville 2012, p. 285). These particles are hazardous when inhaled. In this regard, it is recommendable to dampen a region from which removal of fiberglass is to be done so as not to allow the particles to escape into the air. Also known as mineral wool insulation, rock wool insulation is made of batts which are quite easy to install just like the case of fiberglass wool. The difference between rock wool insulation and fiberglass insulation is that for rock wool insulation instead of fibers of glass it is made of rocks. The process of manufacture involves heating of natural rock to a temperature of about 3000?C at which it melts. The molten rock which is in the form of magma is subjected to a very high-pressure jet of either steam or air. After this, it is spun a super high speed to form strands of fiber(Elpel 2010, p. 192). The fiber strands are then captured and compressed into dense, thick mats which are thereafter cut and trimmed into batts of insulation of convenient sizes. The final product has unique and high qualities among them; Fire resistant and non-combustible Excellent acoustic blocking properties Up to 75% of composition is recycled Manufactured from sustainable natural material Better insulator than fiberglass Not easily degrading hence durability and long-term performance No stapling needed Prevents molding and mildew as it permits the escape of moisture Rock wool insulation is applied in the insulation of such materials as attics, floors, walls, crawlspaces as well as ceilings. Rock wool fiber is however found to excellent insulators for rooms aligned to the northern side of a house and for spaces that require maximum sound deadening. The thermal conductivity performance of an insulation material is a factor moisture content, density of the material, porosity and mean difference in temperature(Bingham 2009, p. 169). The thermal conductivity of polystyrene has the highest thermal conductivity of up to 5.5 per inch followed by fiberglass at R-3.8 per inch and lastly rock wool at R-2.8 per inch of thickness. These values indicate that polystyrene is the densest of the three insulation materials and rock wool the least dense. When the temperature of the insulation materials is increased, the thermal conductivities also change and the degree of change is depending on the density. The higher the density of the material, the lower the sensitivity to changes in the thermal conductivity. In this regard, polystyrene which has the highest density (49.3kgm-3) shows the least sensitivity to temperature changes while rock wool exhibits the greatest deviations(Bennett 2009, p. 87). Wilderness Ethics Essays - Animal Welfare, Zoology, Zoo, Circus

Wilderness Ethics Lavar McCullough February 11, 2000 Essay #2 Wilderness Ethics Wildlife can be found all over the world. Animals come in all shapes and sizes and some still haven't even been accounted for. Animals were on this planet long before man, but they may not be here when man leaves. The animals' downfall results from the extensive studying, exploitation, and the destruction of their habitats, which should be against the law. There is a lot of information that can still be learned about certain species of animals. This information is good, only if it furthers human knowledge and the animal's well being. Studies done on animals involve clinical research. Taking an animal out of the wild simply to research it for common knowledge is unnecessary. Information on any animal can be gained by observation of the animal in its own natural habitat. Altering the behavior of animals is a different form of ?injustice.? The best example of the behavioral alteration is the circus. Under the big top of the circus, wild animals are taught to do tricks upon command. The audience sees obediently trained animals; but cannot see the process that it takes to tame those wild animals. The wild animals have a home in the circus until they lose their ability to perform. When the animals lose their ability to perform, they also lose their ability to fend for themselves in the wild. Therefore once their career in the circus is over, they must remain in captivity for the rest of their lives. Zoos are another business that profits at the expense of animals. Wild animals are hunted down and purposely taken from their habitat only to be put in cages. Over the years, zoos have become nicer and can accommodate a large number of species, but they are not the best home for animals. A life behind iron bars cannot compare to the life the animals would have running or flying free in the wild. The zoos' only justification is that the animals are taken care of well. Animals must be treated better, and their environments need to be saved if they are going to survive. Studying animals has a few benefits; but when the research is over, the animals are no better off. Despite the fact that zoos and the circus do more harm than good for the animals, they both will probably be around for along time. Therefore humans must learn to coexist with animal species that inhabited this planet long before man arrived. Animal Science

The Case for Bush essays

The Case for Bush essays In the article The Case For Bush Charles Krauthammer gives his opinions as to why he thinks that President Bush shows the political courage needed in wartime and to as why he should be re-elected. With the ensuing election approaching Krauthammer states its significance with a war going on. Throughout the article Krauthammer clearly expresses his approval of President Bush and his leadership skills. Stating facts of how the president has acted and re-acted to wartime situations with good sound judgment and political correctness exemplifies Krauthammers creditability. Krauthammer starts the main body of the article with the start of the war on 9/11 and how he thinks George Bush comprehended the situation immediately. By acting quickly and declaring war on all terrorist and states that harbor terrorist, he fills that Bush had done something that was absolutely necessary. Krauthammer displays his logic for the piece by presenting the fact that with the tragedy of 9/11 how could the U.S. not go to war on terrorism and avenge the deaths of thousands of innocent Americans? The author goes on to write about the first 100 days after 9/11 and how the world saw some of the most important victories ever achieved in the fight against terrorism. Krauthammer lists the fall of Afghanistan, the insertion of a pro-American government, and the decimation of al-Qaeda required great political courage because, it was thought that this region was once believed to be unconquerable. The writer insights that Bush led and succeeded by mobilizing the American people within 10 days with one of the great speeches in modern American history, an address to Congress so compelling that 19,000 hockey fans in a Philadelphia arena stopped the game so he could be heard and they could be led. With these statements of facts and the expressive pulling of our heartstrings with the catastrophe of 9/11, the author...

Organization design (dealing with resistance to change) Assignment

Organization design (dealing with resistance to change) - Assignment Example In this essay, we will focus on the lifecycle of resistance to change to establish the stage at which Bonneville is, at present, with its change strategies. In 2013, Bonneville was first reported to have involved in a discriminative hiring scandal of two veterans. After a conclusive investigation, the U.S Department of Energys Inspector General released its report confirming the scandal (Ted, BPA: Feeds Release Damning Investigation of Bonnevilles Hiring Practices and Management Culture 1). The investigative report stated that, the Portland-based power marketing agency was found to have consistently manipulated the rankings of applicants as well as failing to disclose the inappropriate behavior that led them to discrimination against veterans and other applicants. Going further, the company did not bother to initiate any corrective measures aimed at offering a remedy to the problems. With this report, the pressure to change was mounting and increasing through the courts and warnings of the Department of Energy. After the issuance of this report, the public realized about the scandal and the prohibited practice of this company. At this stage, most of the BPA officials tried as much as they can to distance themselves with the allegation and the DOE procedures (Ted, BPA: Feeds Release Damning Investigation of Bonnevilles Hiring Practices and Management Culture 2). They considered that such procedures and processes were an unnecessary administrative burden. This situation, as we remember, is what led to prohibited personnel practices and went ahead to prevent their disclosure. At the moment, the flaws of BPA had been identified and made public. After two whistleblowers had reported BPA for their flawed and discriminative recruitment practices, both the court and U.S Department of Energy issued strong punishment to the company with warnings to see that they comply with the employment regulations. The veterans have a preference to employment as

Comparative Analysis of The Communist Manifesto by Marand The Gospel Essay

Comparative Analysis of The Communist Manifesto by Marand The Gospel by Andrew Carnegie - Essay Example new phenomenon but industrialization led to the emergence of the two classes which included the laborers or the proletariats and the owners of the means of production or the bourgeoisie (Marx and Friedrich). Carnegie on ‘the gospel of wealth’, wealthy individuals who have amassed their wealth through businesses must adopt a just distribution approach that guarantees good use of the money. Money from entrepreneurship venture must be protected and not spent on frivolous purposes which have no significant implication on the society and the people. The presence of poverty within the capitalistic world can be completely removed if entrepreneurs become philanthropists who share their business spoils with the disadvantaged in the society (Carnegie). In this paper, the thesis of Carnegie and Marx will be compared to provide a critical evaluation of how they impact on the society. The paper will adopt the position taken by Carnegie in the ‘gospel of wealth’ and advocate for the redistribution of profits and proceeds from business in capitalistic economies. In the communist manifesto, Marx highlighted his views of the society and how industrialisation had created significant segregation of people into different classes. As captured in the opening phrase of the manifesto, the history of human beings has an age old practise of dividing the human population into various classes based on their economic abilities and the influence they hold in the society. The class struggles have not necessarily been influenced by everything, but more specifically the principle forms of production within the society. When the industrial revolution arose, the European society was defined by the position that the individuals held within the industries and the production factors that they controlled (Carnegie). Those individuals who had the power to own the means of production such as raw materials, the cottage industries among other form of production belonged to the upper class and

How Communication With Children And Young Essay Example for Free

How Communication With Children And Young Essay Children at different ages require different levels of attention, younger children will need more support which would mean more physical support, as children get older they need help with explaining and discussing their thoughts and issues they may have. When talking to different ages of children your vocabulary will need to change as younger children wont understand you if you were to use big words, so small and simple words would need to be used, as children get older turning into young people your vocabulary would develop more. Children and young people who may have communicational difficulties would need a whole different approach in the way you talk to them and the way they may communicate back. Some children and young people may be shy and quiet which would effect the way you would communicate with them, you need to adapt and respect how different children and young people are and their own individual needs. Some children and young people have a stammer or another type of speech disorder, when the child or young person are talking to you, you need to give them time to talk, never butt in to try and complete what they are saying you have to be patient and understand their speech disorder, if you try and rush them it will only make things worse as the child or young person will feel anxious and may find it harder to communicate with you. Working with children or young people who have special educational needs, you may need additional training such as sign language or makaton to help with communication. â€Å" Myself and the other staff use makaton in school, which is a big part of communication towards the pupils â€Å" The reason why makaton is used within the environment of special needs is that it is made up of simple words and signs, makaton is used for all ages who have learning difficulties, sign language is used for the deaf and it has its own vocabulary which is why it wouldnt be appropriate for the different age ranges who have learning difficulties it would be to hard to  grasp. In my school the pupils use pecs book which are made up of pictures that they can relate to. The pecs books are all pictures and a â€Å" i want â€Å" picture so when they request something at snack some children will point to â€Å" i want â€Å" and then to what they have chosen to have for snack, but some children will only pick out what picture they want like â€Å" a apple† and they will put it into my hand, i will then respond by saying the â€Å"childs name wants apple good talking† followed by giving the child a piece of apple. Some children use these pecs books at home to help with communication. Picture symbols are shown and given to the pupils on every transition, if for instance we were going to PE there would be two picture symbols on a schedule they would be a picture of a classroom and of PE, this shows them that after PE it is back to the classroom. This is such a great way of communication.

Wireless Technology Essay -- Network Congestion,

Wireless is a new technology that allows users to access information and services regardless of the geographic position. People can utilize and surf the Internet with computers (e.g., laptop, palmtop, smart phone and PDA) whenever and wherever possible. In general, wireless network can be classified into two types: infrastructure network and ad hoc network. Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is an autonomous group of mobile users who communicate through relatively bandwidth constrained wireless links. Since the hosts are mobile, the network topology may change rapidly and unpredictably over time [3]. Congestion in a network may occur if the load on the network (the numbers of packets send to the network) is greater than the capacity of the network (the number of packets a network can handle). Thus network congestion can severely increase delay and packet loss and reduced network throughput. Congestion control refers to techniques and mechanisms that can either prevent congestion before it happens, or remove congestion after it happened. The main objective of congestion control is to limit the delay and buffer overflow caused by network congestion and provide better performance of the network [6]. In wire line networks, congestion control is implemented at the transport layer and is often designed separately from functions of other layers [20]. However, these congestion control techniques do not apply directly to adhoc networks because the ad hoc network is challenged by limited wireless bandwidth, power constraints, route failures due to node mobility and limited buffer size. The final result is high packet-loss rate, re-routing instability, loss of energy, bandwidth and retransmission of lost packets, which means that even mo... ...ne ( warn_line= queue_size/2), then the node’s congestion status becomes Zone I (safe zone). The average queue length greater than Minth and less than Maxth, then the node’s congestion status becomes Zone-II (likely to be congested zone) and initiates alternate path discovery mechanism. In mean time, the instant queue size is greater than Maxth due to heaviness of incoming traffic and the status of alternate path discovery becomes false. In this situation our algorithm introduce queue utilization parameter consists of three ranges {85%queuesize, 87.5%queuesize, 90%queuesize} which will help to change Maxth values dynamically until alternate path discovery becomes true. Finally average queue length is greater than Maxth, then the node’s congestion status becomes Zone –III(congested zone). The algorithm of dynamic congestion detection algorithm is shown in Fig.1. Teaching Human Virtues

Human beings grow and mature through their experiences in life. With the help of parents, friends and other people we get to know, human beings are able to learn many different lessons and knowledge. Human virtues are normally inculcated in our minds at a very young age, thought by no less than our immediate family members. Through time, we may or may not abandon the virtues that we believe in depending on our personal perceptions and our social environment. Nonetheless, human virtues can be taught not only because such virtues are ‘social constructs’ but also because human beings have the tendency to teach things by ostensive definition which can easily train people into believing many different things. John Locke proposed in Book II of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding that the state of human beings at birth can be compared to a tabula rasa or a blank tablet—the mind is basically empty of knowledge (Wood, p. 652). Conversely, we acquire knowledge through experience, specifically through sensory perception, as well as through our interactions with other people. One way of learning is through ostensive definition or defining what a concrete object or an abstract idea is by ‘pointing’ to the object or the manifestation of the idea. A child learns what a ‘chair’ is when somebody points an object chair to a child and tells the child that the object is a chair. Similarly, a person learns what the human virtue of kindness is when somebody points to a certain manifestation of the virtue and tells the person to observe the behavior. In essence, human virtues are abstract concepts that can be best understood in terms of their physical manifestations. For instance, the virtue of charity can be learned by observing a person who willingly donates some of his properties to charitable institutions such as orphanages. The virtue of bravery can be learned when a child sees a group of firemen trying to put out a fire from inside a burning building. There are also other ways to teach and learn different human virtues apart from ostensive definition. One of these ways is through formal education where students are taught what human virtues are with the help of books and other written articles. To a certain degree, learning institutions provide the theoretical framework for these human virtues. Thus, students learn the theoretical aspects of human virtues in the classroom while they learn the practical aspects of these virtues in real-life circumstances outside the school. From the state of tabula rasa, human beings progress into filling those empty slates with learning taught from experience, including human virtues. On the other hand, Aristotle maintains that human virtues can only be acquired by enacting the principle of the â€Å"mean†. According to Aristotle, virtues are the â€Å"mean† or middle values between ‘excess’ and ‘deficiency’ (Yu, p. 341). For example, courage is the mean of rashness—excessive courage—and cowardice or the deficiency of courage. How can an individual attain the human virtues or how can an individual live within the confines of the â€Å"mean†? To that question, Aristotle tells us that we should habituate our actions. Since every human being should strive to attain the good life or what he calls Eudaimonia, they should likewise see to it that they constantly practice the virtues so that they can be habituated. Following Aristotle’s theory, human virtues can be taught because virtues can be—as they should be—habituated. By performing virtuous actions to others and by habituating them, others are, in effect, taught about the value of these virtues. Those who are unaware of the idea that helping an old lady cross the street, for example, is an act of kindness can learn about the virtue by experiencing the act themselves. Children who are yet to fill their â€Å"blank tablets† with knowledge can be taught about human virtues through constant exposure to the action and by requesting them to do the same thing in their lives. In his book The Construction of Social Reality, John Searle argues that institutional facts are facts that have been socially constructed. That is, human beings and the society in which they live in are responsible for creating these types of facts. In that sense, human virtue can be considered as an institutional fact primarily because human beings have long proposed varying theories concerning the nature of virtues. Without human beings, one can hardly say that virtues will still exist. The fact that â€Å"human virtues† are called as such suggests that, without humanity, these virtues would not have come into existence. Following Searle’s argument, it does sound reasonable enough to say that human virtues can be taught. Like factual lessons taught to young people in classrooms and in the family, human virtues are also taught in almost the same manner. Some can even go to the point where they create their own virtue systems. The fact that there are varying conceptions of human virtues also points us to the idea that human virtues have been formulated across different cultures in different times. While one act may be considered absurd by one group such as cannibalism, another group may consider the act as virtuous. Among these varieties of groups, every respective virtue is passed on from one generation to another, making it survive through time or reducing it into inexistence or into another form. In highly traditional regions, virtues are taught either through word of mouth or through practice. For example, the virtue of â€Å"bayanihan† in the Philippines—the virtue where members of the community form a team to help a resident transfer his house to another location, typically through manual labor—is taught from one generation to the next through stories told to the younger members of the neighborhood and through the observation of the practice as it happens (Gibson and Zellmer-Bruhn, p. 283). In more modern countries, human virtues are taught through a number of ‘far-reaching’ ways; one of these ways is through mass media. For example, America is host to numerous television networks broadcasting hundreds of TV shows on a daily basis. Cartoons with a broad adult audience composition such as â€Å"Simpsons† and â€Å"King of the Hill† teach human virtues typically related to family matters through the stories of each episode and their characters. Children’s cartoons and puppet shows—for instance, Baby Looney Tunes and Sesame Street, respectively—are more likely to impart human virtues that can be easily understood and appreciated by children because they comprise the larger part of the audience share (Cross, p. 39). Those who think that human virtue cannot be taught may believe that human beings are incapable of teaching virtue in their pure form without alteration or bias. In effect, they might argue that what we consider as the virtues per se that we teach others are actually parodies of a seemingly endless string of parodies of parodies, ad infinitum. The response to that criticism is this: alterations only arise in specific contexts; virtues remain as they are in their general form. For example, a father may teach his children that it is only virtuous to avenge the death of their murdered grandfather when they become adults later in life. The father may have been given that impression about vengeance from the older generation of the family circle who also learned the â€Å"virtue† from those that preceded them, and so forth. And yet, the more general notion that causing harm to others is not virtuous remains. The more general notion that kindness and forgiveness are human virtues that should be practiced still remains intact. Others may also argue that human virtues cannot be taught because human beings are governed by their basic instinct for self-preservation. They primarily seek their personal interests and may or may not eventually promote the interests of others. Thus, they keep the virtues that can promote their personal welfare to themselves instead of teaching them to others out of fear of conflicting interests. The response to this argument rests on the very nature of human virtues; they are called â€Å"human virtues† because they presuppose that human beings naturally interact and share with others. Without sincere interaction and sharing, virtues can only be regarded as personal philosophies or personal guiding principles and not as what we know of them to be. They are called â€Å"human virtues† precisely because these virtues transcend individualism and selfishness. Otherwise, they would not be virtues in the first place. While it may be more or less likely true that human beings have a selfish gene, so to speak, it does not make them pathologically selfish beings. Neither does it totally prevent them from teaching human virtues to others, especially young children and those who need a lesson or two about them. It is through our daily experiences that we are able to learn human virtues as we observe them and, more importantly, as they are taught to us by those who know the virtues well enough. Although some people may decide not to teach others about human virtues, it does not consequently suggest that human beings are indeed incapable of teaching human virtues to others. The fact that each person can decide whether or not to teach human virtues to others also suggests that they can teach these virtues regardless of their personal decisions. A virtue taught to another individual may be in the form of an observed behavior, an ostensive definition or a theoretical example. Either way, human virtues can be taught. Not even the most selfish person in the world can deny the fact that human virtues have been passed on from one generation to the next.
